Breaking Moulds: Meera Mukherjee

Art1st Books/ KNMA, 2023

Lyrically written by Vaishali Shroff and as lushly illustrated by Shivam Choudhary, this pop-up book for children of all ages, highlights the life and work of one of India's prominent sculptors——Meera Mukherjee. Accompanied by explorative activities and insightful questions, this is one in a series of thoughtfully produced books on Indian artists.

"Several miniature books were made for Breaking Moulds to test the pop-ups and several iterations and corrections followed. Adapting the text and the art to the mechanics of the pop-ups took a fair amount of metaphorical thinking and trial-and-error.

I also had to create a fun series of templates for cut-and-fold shapes as activities for children to be a part of the art exploration section."

Here is a video of one of the earliest prototypes. (5 mins)
